Peter Yokum
Peterson Moon Yokum, an eighth generation native of New Orleans, followed his mother in his
passion for the canvas. Peter studied for 7 years at the famed Art Students League of New York
under the tutelage of Frank Mason where he learned the classical approach, especially the
human figure, as studied when academies were established in Renaissance Italy.  Peter has
applied his classical training with the inspiration of his environment, New Orleans, the city of
Jazz. He lives in the Vieux Carre, where great music and jubilation capture the true essence of
life. Peter is a true New Orleans artist - musician and painter. His atelier is his home Casa
Hinard has been in his family for generations.  His paintings of New Orleans Jazz musicians are
widely collected throughout the world.  Not only does Peter demonstrate his fine painting of the
human form, especially in the facial expressions, Peter recreates the rhythm of jazz with his
passion for his heritage.  The superb still life paintings of Louisiana fruit, Crawfish, Creole
Tomatoes, Crabs, and are all luscious paintings where the color changes with the light and you
see the layers of richness in his paint. His beautiful academic drawings, usually a nude study of
the human figure can be found in many private collections. Mainly on exhibit at his historic home
"Casa Hinard" 1797. To view more of Peter's work visit his website at
