Megan Hillerud was born in Edmonton, Alberta, Canada. She studied Photography
Technology at the Northern Alberta Institute of Technology from 1991-1993. After
some extensive traveling and working, in 1997 she decided to attend the Alberta
College of Art and Design in Calgary, Alberta, where she was introduced to both
sculpture and glass blowing. In 1999, she graduated from a two year Fine Arts
program at the Grant MacEwen Community College in Edmonton. The following year
she enrolled at the University of Alberta where she received her B.F.A. in metal
sculpture in 2003. During this time she continued to enroll in summer glass
workshops at Red Deer College, and was a teaching assistant there for three years.
This is where she became interested in sand casting hot glass, and incorporating it
within her abstract steel sculptures. She was able to work with New Orleans based
artists Mitchell Gaudet, Stephen Paul Day, and James Vella, who strongly
encouraged her to apply to Tulane University for her Graduate Studies. Working
under the direction of Professor Gene Koss for two and a half years, she was able to
expand her glass and steel work in terms of scale and concept.
Megan’s Graduate Thesis show included sculptures based on a personal philosophy
of optimistic randomness, using the subject matter of gambling as a metaphor for
life. Her recent work continues to expand on the theme of hopeful possibilities and
overcoming adversity. She plans to stay in New Orleans, continue teaching at Tulane
University, and working at Studio Inferno in the Bywater. She also intends to
continue participating in international glass art workshops, and exhibiting her work
regularly in galleries.
