Mac Ball was born in Charleston, South Carolina. He received a B.A. in Studio Art from the
University of North Carolina at Chapel Hill where he focused on drawing and printmaking. After
that, he earned a Masters of Architecture from Yale University. He spent six years as a lead
designer in the office of architect Cesar Pelli, where he worked on the Museum of Modern Art
expansion, the Pacific Design Center in Los Angeles, and the Crile Clinic Building at the
Cleveland Clinic in Cleveland, Ohio, which won a national AIA Honor Award in 1985.
In 1989, he formed Waggonner and Ball Architects with partner David Waggonner. The firm has
designed numerous award winning projects in the Gulf Coast region including the Port of New
Orleans Headquarters on the Mississippi River, Tulane’s A. B. Freeman School of Business
Graduate Facility and the Ellenora P. McWilliams School of Theatre and Dance, as well as
projects at numerous private schools in New Orleans (new lower school at Isidore Newman, Les
Enfants at Trinity Episcopal, new athletics facility and middle school at Country Day). Current
projects include a complete restoration of the historic landmark U.S. Custom House on Canal
Street, the rebuilding of the steeple of Rayne Memorial Methodist Church on St. Charles Avenue,
and the Southern Yacht Club.
Mac has served on the boards of the New Orleans Museum of Art and the New Orleans Center for
the Creative Arts (NOCCA). He has taught at Yale and Tulane Universities and has been a guest
critic at Tulane and Williams College.
Mac’s paintings are informed and influenced by his travels and his collection of art, photography,
and ceramics. In addition to painting and sculpting for the past thirty years, he has recently
been exploring a new interest in ceramics, making both hand-built and wheel-thrown vessels.
