Fetish Figures

“A fetish (from French fétiche;... from Latin
facticius, «artificial» and facere, («to make ») is an
object believed to have supernatural powers, or in
particular a man-made object that has power over
others. Essentially, fetishism is attributing some
kind of inherent value or powers to an object.”

“Fetish, n.1 any material object supposed to have
magic power…SYN: talisman, amulet.”

There was a slow evolution in the production of
these fetish figures. The objects shown in this
exhibit reflect the influence of African, Pre-
Colombian, Egyptian, and Chinese artifacts. Most
of the figures began in clay. Molds were made
from those clay objects. Wax models were then
made from those molds, which were subsequently
altered and cast in bronze, pewter or glass.
