David is an artist and historic preservation architect living in New Orleans. As a youth
in the historic small town of Laurel, Mississippi, he developed an interest in drawing,
painting and architecture.  David’s background includes a graduate degree in
Historic Preservation from Tulane University and operating his own architectural
practice since 1995.  He has been involved with the Vieux Carre’ Commission for the
past four years where he volunteers to review modifications to French Quarter
buildings.  He received his artistic training at Newcombe College and the New
Orleans Academy of Fine Arts.

David has an intense interest in the architectural history of New Orleans and his
work usually includes views of historic buildings. This work is a form of realism in the
genre of artists he admires like Richard Estes, Daniel Greene and Edward Hopper.
David’s approach to his art is that he believes in simply showing the viewer what was
there.  The light qualities, textures and colors speak for themselves. His artistic
intent is inherent in the view and selection of subject as well as the execution.  He
encourages the viewer to take a fresh look at familiar places.

The artist is continually discovering interesting views of the buildings, people and
environs of New Orleans.  On his “hunting trips” in the French Quarter, Garden
District, and other areas, he uses a digital camera and sketchbook to find new
material for his paintings. He is currently experimenting with a device know as the
Camera Lucida, once used by renaissance artists, to render landscapes and
buildings.  David resides in the Carrollton neighborhood where his restored 1907
home, garden, and studio are located.
